CIMP-3D at Penn State represents over 35 faculty associates and 10 full-time engineering staff having expertise in a wide range of technologies relevant to AM.

Representing five colleges and three interdisciplinary research organizations within Penn State, members of our team are internationally recognized leaders in their respective fields, and the engineering staff in CIMP-3D are comprised of individuals that have extensive experience and success in industry.

Ted Reutzel

Director CIMP-3D

Penn State ARL and Associate Professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics
Ph.D Mechanical Engineering, Penn State

Dr. Reutzel has been involved in arc- and laser-based metal processing since 1993, with emphasis on welding and cladding, and more recently with emphasis on metal-based additive manufacturing. He has chaired multiple sessions at the International Congress on Laser and Electro Optics (ICALEO), and served as Chair of the Laser Material Processing for Solar Energy Conference at the SPIE Optics + Photonics event from 2012-2014. He has managed numerous programs to investigate and implement laser material processing across a wide range of applications, has authored and co-authored book chapters, has provided invited articles and invited talks internationally.

He recently won the 2014 Best Paper Award at the Solid Freeform Fabrication Symposium – An Additive Manufacturing Conference.

Timothy Simpson

Co-Director CIMP-3D

Penn State Mechanical & Industrial Engineering
Ph.D. Mechanical Engineering, Georgia Tech

Dr. Simpson is a Professor of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering at Penn State with affiliate appointments in the School of Engineering Design, Technology, and Professional Programs and the College of Information Sciences & Technology. He has received numerous research and teaching awards, including the 2011 ASEE Fred Merryfield Design Award and the 2007 Penn State President’s Award for Excellence in Academic Integration. He is a Fellow in ASME and an Associate Fellow in AIAA. He is Co-Director of CIMP-3D.
