Why CIMP-3D?

To address the multidisciplinary needs for advancing AM technology, CIMP-3D acts as a catalyst for engaging broad faculty collaboration that enables pooling of resources to create an exceptional research capability. The Center includes three complimentary components designed to accomplish this mission:

  • An exceptional technical team having comprehensive knowledge in all facets of AM
  • A state-of-the-art development and demonstration facility encompassing all necessary capabilities for analysis, simulation, manufacturing, and characterization
  • A network of Center Associates providing a broad perspective of all aspects of AM technology

CIMP-3D has built a reputation as a national resource for AM technology advancement. CIMP-3D serves as the additive manufacturing demonstration facility for the DoD under DARPA’s Open Manufacturing program, is a founding member of America Makes, and is an integral partner of the Penn State Applied Research Laboratory’s Institute for Manufacturing and Sustainment Technologies (iMAST), which is a U.S. Navy Manufacturing Technology Center of Excellence.

Design for AM

AM requires engineers to completely rethink how to design products for manufacturing.  CIMP-3D leads the field in design thinking, topology optimization, and complex geometric modeling.

Material Science

Metals, ceramics, and polymers: CIMP-3D can do it all. Our center associates know how to develop, characterize, and deploy advanced materials based on a fundamental understanding of material science.

AM Processes

CIMP-3D maintains a broad range of process expertise for both metal and polymer systems. This includes robust understanding of process modeling, closed-loop control, and post-processing requirements.
