America Makes, a U.S. National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute, recently announced that Penn State’s Applied Research Laboratory was one of two winners of the Steel (HY-80) Wire-Arc Additive Heat Treatment (SWAAHT) project call.
PSU will lead a team consisting of Lincoln Electric, John Deere, QuesTek Innovations, and Pan Optimization on a project titled Additive Manufacturing Casting Replacement Optimization (AMCRO) – Heat Treating and Chemistry. The difficulty in finding rapid, local manufacturing of castings is an ongoing challenge for defense and commercial manufacturers, particularly given ongoing supply chain disruptions and dynamic international trade policies. While wire-arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) has been successfully utilized to replace castings for large prototypes and select production components, the U.S. Navy needs a more complete understanding of the impact of WAAM material and heat treat on final properties. This program addresses the U.S. Navy’s need by developing a holistic framework to scale AM-based alternatives to HY-80 steel castings.
